The word Bogolan means made with mud (the fabric, woven from cotton, is dyed by being steeped in a decoction of leaves and tree bark. Then, patterns are drawn on the fabric itself with mud from marshes, which is rich in ferrous salts).
The chemical reaction between ferric oxide and tannic acid gives this fabric a black color, characteristic of Bogolan. Then, the fabric is dried, then rinsed with water to remove excess mud.
The operation is repeated several times on the areas where beautiful black colors are desired. At the end of the process, the yellowish parts are bleached using a mixture of millet and peanuts mixed with soda.
